Wm. Edw. Henry John Edward William Samuel Frances Elizabeth James
1843 1845 1848-1917 1850-1917 1852- 1857-1899 1864-1864 1867-1943 1869-

William Edward Cufflin 1843-
William Edward Cufflin was baptised on 18 December 1843, the son of Henry Cufflin and Elizabeth Baum, no doubt he was named after his grandparents William Cufflin and Edward Baum. No other information is available to date but it is thought that he did not survive beyond six years as two future sons were named Edward (1850-1917) and William (1852-
It has not been confirmed but there is a William Edward Cufflin whose death is recorded on the Free BMD website in the quarter ending December 1843!

Henry Cufflin 1845-
At the time of the 1851 census Harry Cufflin was staying with his Grandparents Edward and Hannah Baum. He married Mary Ann Roulson of Leicester at St. Margarets Church. They were living at 5 St. Saviours Road at the time of the 1881 Census and it is their child, William Thomas Cuffling, who is interred in the same grave at Welford Road as his grandparents in Plot No. A/347

John Cufflin 1848-1917
John Cufflin was born in 1849 and was the third son of Henry Cufflin and Elizabeth Baum. He married Mary Wardle, 1849-1925, in 1873 but so far have not found any children.
In 1881 (Census) they were caretakers at the Opera House in Silver Street and living with them was five-year-old Mary E Cooke who at that time was described as a 'visitor'. In 1891 (census) they were living at 131 Humberstone Road where John is described as a 'Letter Carrier', Mary is a self employed Dressmaker and Mary E Cooke, also a Dressmaker, is described as their Niece.
It is just possible that Mary E Cooke has been entered twice on the 1881 Census, once as described above and the second as living with her mother Eliza Cooke, and grandfather John Wardle, at 52 Laxton Street.
John and Mary were both living at 134 Gwendolin Road Leicester prior to their deaths, John in 1917 and Mary in 1925. They are buried at Welford Road Cemetery Plot No. A/507.

Edward Cufflin c.1851-1917
Edward Cufflin was born c.1851 and was married to Elizabeth Hackett 1853-1916 of Nottingham at St. Margarets Church Leicester in 1870. Their children were: Florence Ada, born 1871; Frances, 1873; Catherine, 1875; Eliza, 1877; John T, 1878-1937; Alice, 1880 and Beatrice who died in 1897 at the age of sixteen years.
Edward died on 23 October 1917 and is buried at Welford Road Cemetery Plot T/1232 with his wife and daughter Beatrice.

William Cufflin 1852-
William Cufflin (Wandering William) was born in 1852 in Leicester, the son of Henry Cufflin and Elizabeth Baum. When he married Alice Smith (1852-1881) on 11 August 1872 he was living at Alfred Street Leicester. Alice who was born at Anstey in 1852, was the daughter of John Smith an Agricultural Labourer and his wife Elizabeth and was living at Curzon Street Leicester at the time of her marriage. She died in the Borough Asylum Leicester in 1881 at the age of 30 leaving her husband, and two children, our Grandfathers, William Frederick Cufflin and John Henry Cufflin aged 4 and 2 years. She is buried in Welford Road Cemetery, Plot N/492

Samuel Cufflin 1858-1899
Samuel Cufflin was born in Leicester in 1857 the son of Henry Cufflin and Elizabeth Baum. He was married to Emma (1857- of Ashley in Northamptonshire. In 1881 they were living at 107 Argyle Street. Samuel was employed as a Shoe Finisher and Emma was a Cotton Hand.
In 1891 (census) he was described as a widower living at 13 Larch Street Leicester with his two sons, Samuel and William; his brother William also a widower; and his Nephew William. A Rose Illson, aged 31, described as single and a Dressmaker was also living there as a border.
Rose was the daughter of Thomas and Catherine Illson of Thurlaston who had nine children, four of them dying at an early age, including one who was blind and a fifth at the age of 29. Rose also had a son who was baptised on 1st February 1880, who she named James Allen Bosworth but there is no trace of him at the time of the 1881 Census which might suggest that he did not survive or was perhaps adopted?
In 1881 Rose was living at Roes Rest, Leicester Forest West where she was employed as a General Servant to Albert Goodacre, a Farmer of 100 Acres, and his half sister Mary Ann Leaper.
Samuel married Rose around 1891 and they had two children: Herbert 1895-1977 who married Rose Braker; and Agnes Rose Elizabeth who died aged 8 months in August 1897. Herbert's daughter, the late Mary Cave, informed me that her grandmother came from Thurlaston and Wrights Directory of 1892 lists a Mrs Rose Cufflin, Dressmaker, at 13 Larch Street. This is repeated in the directories for 1894 and 1898 Mary also says that her grandmother went to live with Samuel, following the death of his first wife, to look after the two young children but later had to leave to look after her own parents who were ill. She returned to marry Samuel and by all accounts it was a very happy marriage, albeit a short one. Samuel died in 1899 at the age of 42 as a result of leaving his sick bed in order to pay the wages for his men at Sabins in Humberstone Road where he was employed as a Foreman. He was buried at Welford Road Cemetery, Plot T/463, on New Years Day 1900.

Frances Cufflin 1864-1864
Frances Cufflin was the first daughter of Henry Cufflin and Elizabeth Baum. She was just three weeks old when she died on 12 June 1864 at Humberstone Gate Leicester, she is buried at Welford Road Cemetery, Plot A/347.

Elizabeth Cufflin 1867-1943
Elizabeth Cufflin was born in 1867 the second daughter of Henry Cufflin and Elizabeth Baum.
It may be that she was working (perhaps in service) in London because although she never married she had a son, Vivian James Steed Cufflin who was born in Kensington. (The fathers surname may well have been Steed) but who died in 1895 at the age of 8 years.
She was living with her father in Clipstone Street at the time of her sons death and lived there into the 1930's where she was remembered by her niece and nephew, Dorothy M Cufflin (1909-1995) and Ronald KG Cufflin (1920-
She died at 155 Evington Lane Leicester on 21 April 1943 and is buried at Welford Road Cemetery Plot T/73 with her son Vivian.

James Cufflin 1869-
James Cufflin was born in St Margaret's Parish around 1869 according to the 1881 Census, at that time he was living with his father and sister at Great Glen and was in part time employment being then aged eleven years.
He married Charlotte Barden of Drayton in Northants, in 1899 and they had a daughter Constance who was born in 1900.

Arthur
1857-

Arthur Sharman/Cufflin 1857-
Something of a mystery surrounds this family. In 1871 Arthur was living with his parents and employed as a Framehand but at the 1881 Census: His mother Selina, is living with her mother, Christiana; His father, Thomas Sharman is living at 15 St. Margarets Street, Leicester. where he is described as Head of the household, and married, there are two male borders also living there.
I can find no Arthur Sharman in the 1881 but there is an Arthur Cufflin who is married to Jane, a cigar maker and is employed as a Framesmith. They have a two year old daughter who is named Selina.
The possibilities are that Arthur Sharman and Arthur Cufflin are one and the same, a view that is supported by Wendy Edley, a member and researcher of the Sharman family, who puts forward this suggestion:-
If Arthur was born in 1857, then he was born out of wedlock, and may not have been Thomas’s son at all. He may have used the Sharman name for convenience whilst he was living with Thomas, or perhaps for respectability, but he seems to have married under the Cufflin name (Mar 1879 p222), and continued to use it.
